Albox and Arboleas sit about ten kilometres apart on good roads, and most people in the valley treat them as one catchment — much like Mojácar's pueblo and playa. Albox is the commercial hub: the Monday market, the estate agents and lawyers along the Avenida de Andalucía, the businesses that exist almost entirely to serve English-speaking clients. Arboleas is different in character — more countryside village than town — with a large British population living in the surrounding fincas and casas de campo. Businesses based in either draw customers from both, and from Zurgena, Cantoria, Olula del Río, and Bédar beyond.
The appeal of inland valley living is distinct from the coast. The climate is drier — hot in summer but without the coastal humidity, and mild in winter — and people who came planning a long stay often found they never left.
